Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Hospital

This 300-bed hospital is conceived as a patient-centric healthcare facility, where spatial planning is driven by comfort, clarity, and experience. At the heart of the design is a large open-to-sky atrium that acts as a central organizing element, connecting movement, waiting, and healing spaces into a continuous, campus-like environment rather than a conventional hospital layout.

The architecture is carefully adapted to Trichy’s hot climate. Patient rooms are recessed to create shaded terraces, reducing direct heat gain while allowing access to light and views. The building envelope is strategically designed with controlled openings and angled glazing to minimize glare and solar exposure, ensuring thermal comfort without compromising daylight.

Materiality reinforces both performance and identity. The use of locally sourced terracotta gives the building a strong regional character while also contributing to environmental efficiency. Combined with layered balconies, integrated greenery, and soft architectural forms, the hospital moves away from an institutional feel to create a more welcoming and human-scaled environment.

The project demonstrates how patient experience, climate responsiveness, and contextual material use can come together to deliver a healthcare facility that is both efficient and emotionally engaging.
